Chad Harbach – The Art of Fielding

Chad Harbach, The art of fielding

Conclusion

In this paper I have tried to delineate the main themes of a complex and long story, connecting them to the world outside the book to look for reasons explaining the international success of the novel The Art of Fielding.

You told me once that a soul isn’t something a person is born with but something that must be built, by effort and error, study and love. And you did that with more dedication than most, that work of building a soul -not for your own benefit but for the benefit of those that knew you. [33]

The maturation and construction of the soul is the central theme of the book and it concerns all characters, from the youngest -Henry, for example- to the eldest -President Affenlight. This evolution is perfectly portrayed in all its difficulties and inner struggles. The Art of Fielding is a novel of ambitions and failure, of possibilities to restart a life after losing everything for having made the wrong choices.

Has the novel a too generous happy ending? Yes and no.

Yes, as it depicts the typical story of American’s successes and second possibilities, of holding tight against difficulties and fulfilling commitments. No, not only because of the death of president Affenlight, but also because all principal characters have not managed to reach their dreams -Henry, for example, is not drafted for minors in first places as he exepcted- but they learn how to catch the best of what they have, without feeling sorry for what they lost.
